Pathway to College

Many of our students go on to study at a college and university in the US. These schools require that you learn and master English, and usually won’t admit you without a TOEFL or IELTS score.

LASC can help! We’ve come up with three ways to help you get into colleges or universities:

Description TOEFL/IELTS?
1. Community College We’ve partnered with a number of community colleges to accept graduates of our ESL program. No, you will not have to take the TOEFL or IELTS.
2. University (INTO) We’ve partnered with these universities to offer our ESL students additional support while in college. Yes, TOEFL/IELTS is required, but these universities have agreed to accept lower TOEFL/IELTS scores from our ESL graduates.
3. Any College/University Any college or university will accept you if you score high enough on the TOEFL or IELTS. We can help you prepare for the tests! Yes, TOEFL or IELTS is required.

1. Community Colleges without the TOEFL/IELTS

If you’ve graduated from our ESL program and are in good standing, then the following schools have agreed to accept you as a student without a TOEFL or IELTS score:

Marymount Cali University Glendale Community College Cerritos College
Fullerton College Orange Coast College Santiago Canyon College
Golden West College Irvine Valley College DeVry University
New York Film Academy West LA College SaddlebackLogo

The majority of these schools are community colleges, which are much more affordable than four-year colleges and universities.

Here are the average costs of attending a year of school for the 2013-2014 year:

  • The average cost of a public university in California is $47,488 per year. (Click for details)
  • The average cost of the community colleges that we’ve partnered with is $19,682 per year. (Click for details)

So if you start off at a community college for two years and then transfer to a university, you will likely save $63,038 over two years!

2. College/University with a lower TOEFL/IELTS

We’ve partnered with INTO, a program for international students that allows you to enroll into a university to study the program of your choice while improving your English skills. You can earn a bachelor’s degree in four years or a master’s degree in two years.

The universities participating in the INTO program include:

Oregon State Univ University of South Florida Colorado State Univ
Marshall Univ Drew University George Mason Univ
SaintLouisUniv UAB

Each campus has facilities specifically designed to support the needs of international students, as well as advisers who will help you navigate the American university system. The cost is comparable to a non-INTO university tuition.

Students do need to take the TOEFL or IELTS, but a qualifying score is much lower than that of a non-INTO program. Check out the minimum scores needed below:

School Minimum TOEFL Score Minimum IELTS Score
University of South Florida 65 – 78 iBT 5.5 – 6.0
Oregon State University 60 – 75 iBT 5.5 – 6.0
Colorado State University 60 – 86 iBT 5.5 – 6.5

Drew University 60 iBT 5.5
George Mason University 60 iBT 5.5

University of Alabama at Birmingham 60 iBT 5.5

3. College/University with a strong TOEFL/IELTS score

You can go directly to a university with a qualifying minimum TOEFL/IELTS score.

LASC offers an Intensive TOEFL or IELTS Preparation Program to help you improve the skills you need to score well on the test. With a high enough score you can apply directly to a four year college or university. Here are the minimum TOEFL and IELTS scores needed at some of the most popular universities in southern California.
